Music Video Draft 1 (The Rough Cut)

Reflection

In our post production we had a task of making our first draft of our music video, we worked together using our footage from the first shoot to create our first draft. For this music video draft we used the whole song, in which we matched the song to the lip syncing of the star image. A large majority of this draft consists of the performance to the song however on this first shoot we also filmed small sections of our narrative which we have included clips of in this draft.

In our next shoot we are going to focus on getting more clips of our narrative for the music video as well as small sections of the performance that needs to be re shot due to lighting in some shots.

When editing the clips together we made sure they were edited to the beat which we did by cutting the clips using the razor blade tool and syncing different sections together to create a sequence that made sense.

When editing we also repeated some of the clips multiple times as well as repeating different elements in the music video which showed different conventions we used.  We made sure to use a variety of shots and movement when editing the clips together to ensure the audience kept hooked and also we made sure each clip didn’t last too long as the audience would have got bored.

What went well

  • By using our production meeting agenda we were able to be organised and each person remembered a certain piece of equipment we needed to use.
  • The lining up the lips syncing so it was in time.
  • The cutting of the video into the next shot.

Improvements

  • on the next shoot a larger variety of shots need to be filmed.
  • Make sure the new shots have better lighting so the star image can clearly be seen.

Shoot 1 Reflection (The Performance)

Reflection

1. What role did I play in the shoot?

In the shoot I had a handful of roles that I did to help make sure our shoot ran smoothly and went well. In our shoot our star image was one of our group members and me and my other partner both filmed our star at the different settings.

Before our shoot day we all worked together to organise who would bring different parts of our mise-en-scene.

To get the footage i helped to direct the star image with the different actions and positions, this included the different shots and angles we also used to when shooting the music video.

2. What do I think of the footage I/we filmed?

When shooting we managed to film a variety of shots for our music video, we got some good shots that we have looked back on and we think have worked well. However we should have filmed more close ups of our star image, as we have a large amount of mid-shots and long-shots  as we didn’t get enough close ups, which would have worked well in our footage as it looks at specific details. So when we re-shoot we are gonna make sure to film more close-ups.

When filming at the reservoir we had high key lighting and all the footage we took was well lit. However in certain clips filmed in the window scene low key lighting was there this was because the sun was shining through the window leaving the star image as a silhouette, so the mise-en-scene and star image could not clearly be seen.

When filming at the reservoir we had small technical issues with the gimble, as it wouldn’t follow the chosen object at first but we were able to sort it. As well with one of clips we filmed it didn’t save to the phone so we had to re-shoot it.

As a group we have decided we are going to go back and shoot more footage at the reservoir as we didn’t feel we got enough from this location, and in the window, which we will make sure the star image can be clearly seen and is not a silhouette.

Screenshots of the footage

We used a record player when filming as it connected well with the song and song title ‘ put your records on’ and when filming are star image places the record on the record player.

We took different bedroom shots and a couple included window shots with different angles and shot types.

We shot a scene at the reservoir as she can be seen in her room in her comfy clothes than picking out the outfit so here you can see the transformation as the song increase in happiness as well.

Here is another shot that got taken in the bedroom we included the guitar in the shots as it was a prop we were using as there is use of a guitar in the music.

Lip syncing Exercise

Reflection

In this task we worked as a group to create an engaging lip syncing  video that showed the star images qualities as both ordinary and extra ordinary, this includes Richard Dyers theory.  My edited version used a variety of shots and when shooting we tested different angles and shots including transition shots which ensured strong coverage of the video.

What went well

  • Different angles were taken
  • The lip syncing lined up with the song.
  • Cut to beat
  • Movement and facial expression from the star image.

What could be better in the real thing.

  • Transition shots
  • Close ups so emotions and facial expressions can clearly be seen.
  • Framed shots.
  • Props that tie into the songs lyrics.

I used the razor tool in premiere pro to cut the clips on the beat and so the lip syncing lined up with the song.

Improvements that need to be made when making our actual music video is to aim for a stronger coverage of angle, shots and transitions as we lacked transitions in this video. In the video we will also make the star image out to be ordinary and extra ordinary through the use of costume and lighting.

Conventional Shots from a performance within our genre

Made with Padlet

Reflection

In this task we used padlet to create a visual shot list board for the performance of our music video for the song ‘put your records on’ which is the genre, pop-soul, jazz and R&B.

Through doing this I was able to explore and identify key filming conventions and performance styles for my genre. A variety of shots have been chosen to represent the certain types of cinematography we want to shoot of our star image, Under each image a description has been added to describe when each of the different shot will be used. We also thought a lot about which shots would best suit our genre and what would make the most impact on the performance.

Pitch to Specsavers

Reflection

After our group had created our final pitch for our music video ‘ Put your records on’ , we were able to present our pitch to a creative team from Specsavers. In our presentation to Specsavers we showed them our narrative and performance sections, and they were able to give us feedback on what we had done well in our pitch and design and what areas we could improve on . In this they were able to give us improvements to use. From them giving us feedback we gained a wider range of ideas and this helped us to make small improvements to our ideas as well we took a deeper look into the lyrics and we were able to come up with more creative ideas to identify and present key themes.

3 Positives

  • We have strong links between narrative and performance which ties the music video together well.
  • Good choice of colour pallet as the different colours in each clip contrast to show the emotion of the star image, and their different outfits also show the difference between loneliness and confidence.
  • The inspiration board we have created has detailed information of the different shots, angles and mise-en-scene.

3 targets or improvements

  • Need to present the story line more clearly showing the feeling of isolation to confidence and how this can clearly be shown.
  • E.g. Use text messages to show the story line base, and show visual ways to tie together the friendship of the girls.
  • Think about different shots/framing/depth.

Production Meeting for Shoot 1 (The Performance)

Reflection

In this task as a group we have created a production meeting agenda for a shoot on the 18th of June. It is important to create a production meeting agenda before producing the music video as it helps with the organisation of the music video, as it includes key information for the music video shoot. The Information includes hair, make-up, costume and the setting.

We have delegated the tasks between us with each of us having a different contribution to the production and making of the music videos.

Risk Assessment

Reflection

We have considered the risk of each location that we are going to be shooting at, to do this we have filled out the risk assessment form. The risk assessment helps to identify and manage potential risks, this is also important for the safeguarding of each person involved in the music video. We will also ensure that non- media students have parental permission to be in the music video and so they know the potential risks.

Perfect Production Group

Reflection

In this task our group has made a ‘perfect production group agreement’. We have created this to help with the organisation of the production, as we have each added in our transferable skills which we are good at then some that we aren’t as good at. From this we have each been delegated to a specific roles depending on our strengths and weakness this means we will each collaborate to the product with our best skills so this will help us to achieve the best outcome. As well by ensuring we have good communication and commitment to the music video it allows for the work to be evenly distributed so each person can add in their contribution to the project.

Final Song Choice for the Pitch

Reflection

In this task I have worked with my group to plan, produce and present a pitch for our final song choice idea. In this we have decided on the different conventions we will be using , we have outlined the narrative that its going to take place. When planning the narrative we had to think about the narrative type and narrative structure to make sure it was the best suit to our song choice. As well as making sure we had our performance planned out and the props we would need for it.

In the final pitch we have planned out our mise-en-scene and the different costumes and props we will need, we have also put ideas of lighting, action, makeup and hair and the different setting we will be shooting at. Through making the final pitch we have developed a strong identity for our star image through the mission statement and the mise-en-scene images we have included to help give a visual image of how the star image will be portrayed.
